Senator Dan Wolf spoke with passion on NECN's Broadside today, calling for the shutdown of the Pilgrim nuclear plant.
Listen to the clip here and join the Cape Codders working to get Pilgrim shut. Governor Baker doesn't seem concerned. Senator Wolf thinks he should be. "I am worried about continual system failures that could lead to a release of radioactivity. The stored fuel is being stored in a wet storage pool that was designed for about 800 spent fuel rod assembles. There are now over 3000 spent fuel rod assemblies in a pool designed for 800. It's vulnerable, it's unstable."
Senator Wolf and Rep. Sarah Peake are promoting a bill that will require Entergy, in Louisiana, to put away large sums of money every year that it operates to prepare for the eventual closure of Pilgrim. There is also a bill that would require an expanded evacuation zone. What can you do? Call your friends and relatives, who live in Massachusetts, and ask them to contact their State Representatives and Senators, urging support of S1797 and S1798. Please do not say a word about health and safety concerns, because then the bills could be killed on appeal. Thanks!
And, plan to be in Boston on October 22 from 1 to 3 for a Speak Out and Press Conference at the Statehouse, organized by Cape Downwinders.
